The 3 Biggest Lies About Promotional Pens

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Cindy Carrera Every time you turn around there’s someone on your phone or doorstep, trying to sell you pens for you to use for promotional items. Every time they show up, you buy a few hundred or thousand, though more than likely you have a storage closet somewhere that’s full of them. That’s because you’ve bought into lie number one: Pens are a great way to easily promote your business. The truth is a pen is good for branding your business, but it does little to promote your business. Why? Because it doesn’t do any real promoting! A pen with your logo, name, address and phone number just tells people who you are. It does nothing to make them want to use your company’s product or service. Worse, it just lies around, waiting to be picked up and used-and mostly it will be used to make a grocery list, not to find your company’s name and address! Lie number two is that pens are a great way to inexpensively market and promote your business. This isn’t true, and that closet full of pens should be proof enough. Yes, you can get fairly cheap promotional pens, but you know what they really tell people about you? That you’re cheap! People aren’t stupid. They know a cheap item from a more expensive one. And even though they will take and even use your pen, they will not connect you to quality. If you want a pen to do that, and you do or why bother, you’re going to have to buy more expensive pens that show you’re a class act all the way. This kind of promotional pen costs a great deal of money, so you won’t get away, um, cheaply. Quantity and/or quality will, either way, cost you money, so pens aren’t really a cheap promotional item after all, are they? Now, for lie number three. Yes, it’s the big one! Because everyone gives pens away as promotional items, you should too in order to compete. Remember being in high school where everyone dressed the same way? Look back at your yearbook and you’ll see that everyone pretty much looks the same. Only a few brave souls who dared to be different stand out. Same thing with promotional pens. There are a gazillion of them out there. And they all pretty much look the same and say the same thing: logo, contact information and website URL. If you want your promotional item to wow your customers and potential customers, you won’t do it with a pen, most likely, unless it is one killer, expensive pen that does everything a cell phone can do. The promotional arena is just saturated with promotional pens. So break away from the herd! If you feel you have to use a writing instrument as a promotional item, look into buying some cool mechanical pencils! They’re easily available and are far more effective for promoting your business than promotional pens for two reasons: 1) Not everyone else is giving them away, so they’re automatically different, and 2) (and this is a secret!) people want them. Why? They’re great for kids to use in school or to do homework. And help one of today’s busy, overly zealous parents out by giving them something little Jake or Jane can use, and I guarantee you’ll be remembered-and better, called on for your product or service! Mediterranean Diet - What is It?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Ray Darken Well, to begin with, there isn’t really any one Mediterranean Diet! There’s a whole swag of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The basic Mediterranean Diet has common characteristics even if the sourrounding countries differ in culture, language and recipes to some extent. * an extensive intake of fruits, vegetables, bread and cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds * olive oil is a source of mono-unsaturated fat - common to the Mediterranean area * some dairy products, fish and even poultry are consumed in sparing to moderate amounts, and some red meat(not much) * eggs are consumed in low to moderate amount say 1 to 4 eggs a week * fortunately wine is acceptable but in low quantities ie. 1 - 3 glasses per day A good question to ask is - Does a Mediterranean-style diet follow American Heart Association dietary guidelines? Mediterranean-style diets are often close to US dietary guidelines, but not exactly. People who follow the average Mediterranean diet eat less saturated fat than those who eat the average American diet. In fact, saturated fat consumption is well within US dietary guidelines. More than half the fat calories in a Mediterranean diet come from mono-unsaturated fats (mainly from olive oil). Mono-unsaturated fat doesn’t raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does. The incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is lower than in the United States. Death rates are lower, too. However there are some who feel this may not be entirely due to the diet. Lifestyle factors (ie. more physical activity and extended social family support structures) may also play a part. At this stage this is just a theory. However the research tells all - the diet has existed for umpteen years. If you would like further proof of the mediterranean diet benefits resulting from research and qualified researchers you could try visiting http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/348/26/2599 or http://my.webmd.com/content/article/67/80070.htm. Both of these sites give good ‘food for thought’(excuse the pun).”Olive oil plays a central role, but it is not alone,” says Dimitrios Trichopoulos, MD, PhD, of Harvard School of Public Health. “It’s among the divine mix of several factors that, when used in combination, help provide strong evidence of something that is very important — eating the proper diet can significantly reduce your risk of early death.” He and researchers from Greece studied some 22,000 adults, aged 20 to 86, from all regions of that country; most previous studies tracked only older people who were more likely to die during the study. The participants answered detailed questionnaires about their eating habits throughout the four-year study. Then they were rated on how closely they followed the key principles of the Mediterranean diet. Sticking to the Mediterranean diet cut the risk of death from both heart disease and cancer. For every two points higher on this 0-to-9 scale — with top numbers going to those most closely following the Mediterranean diet — the death rate dropped by 25%. The findings by Trichopoulos may also help explain why Asians, who typically use these other cooking oils, also have lower disease and death rates. Although they rarely use olive oil, they traditionally follow other principles of the Mediterranean diet — lots of produce, legumes, nuts, and minimally processed grains, with little saturated fat. “The message remains the same, and is consistent with other findings: A diet lower in saturated fats and higher in monounsaturated fats, and potentially, polyunsaturates, will result in better health outcomes,” says Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, of Tufts University and a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association. “If the main message that Americans get is to just increase their olive or canola oil consumption, that’s unfortunate because they will increase their caloric intake and they are already getting too many calories. What they need to do is eat more fruits, vegetables, and legumes and fewer foods rich in saturated fats.” Some of this information has been referenced from The New England Journal of Medicine, June 26, 2003. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, MD, PhD, professor of epidemiology, Vincent L. Gregory Professor of Cancer Prevention, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, senior scientist and director, Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Researcher Center on Aging, Tufts University, Boston; spokeswoman, American Heart Association. So in a nutshell, there is sound evidence that the Mediterranean Diet can help reduce heart disease, cancer, weight gain and of course reduce the risk of early death. However, it would be a mistake to think this outcome is based on the use of Olive Oil alone. The diet is diverse and allows for taste and creativity which is often lacking in most other diets. This alone warrants further investigation from those who seek a healthy, easy diet that has flavour and is fullfilling. Remember too that just as in all worthwhile diets, moderate level exercise should not be overlooked. Author Ray Darken - Ray often writes for and works with The Mediterranean Diet. Remove Stretch Marks Fast

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Low Jeremy Perhaps it is a skin embellishment most women (and men) are embarrassed of having. Despite it being natures way of proving no one is perfect, we try to hide this flaw by applying whichever product could assist us in removing stretch marks. Stretch marks are scars that can be attained after a pregnancy. Sometimes, if your weight balloons up and down on the weighing scale, chances are you may also have these. Body-building and intense physical activity can also leave you with stretch marks. That is because the skin is over-stretched and the amount of collagen that is normally produced in your body is disrupted, creating a scar. They can appear everywhere and anywhere on everyone and anyone. Chances are, they will be on parts of our bodies where fat is stored. The most common parts are the abdomen, upper arms, under arms, thighs, breasts and buttocks. For women who had just given birth, stretch marks are usually reddish or purple. Their colors fade later on. As soon as the body returns to its original state and size, stretch marks are less noticeable. However, they remain darker than your normal complexion and may seem dirty when you look at it. This is why most people would love to have their stretch marks remove and fast. Most people seek the assistance of doctors. According to Stephen M. Purcell, D.O., the chairman of the Department of Dermatogoly at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Theyre basically nothing more than scars. Stretch marks do not limit our bodies to function properly. If you would like to remove your stretch marks, doctors normally prescribe Tretinoin. It is a topical Vitamin A solution. They also recommend Retin-A. Usually, Retin-A is used to eradicate wrinkles, but lately, it turns out that Retin-A also applies to removing stretch marks. Take note that you could only purchase Retin-A if you have a doctors prescription. Also, there is a perfect time to apply Retin-A on your stretch marks. The best time you can use it is when those marks are still new. The way for you to determine if they still are is when they have a pinking color and a bit painful. If the stretch marks are already white, applying Retin-A on it will not be as successful. If you are a mother who had just given birth, use Retin-A between the 6th to 12th weeks upon giving birth, not beyond three months after having a baby and losing the excess pounds. Also, Retin-A cannot be used while youre pregnant or while youre breastfeeding. Side effects of Retin-A is that the topical ointment initiates some skin irritation. Peeling and redness will occur on the surface where you applied it. There is no need to be alarmed because that only means a new generation of collagen will be taking the place of the old one. If this occurs, Retin A is essentially doing its repair job well. It is when the peeling and redness subside, do you see the actual results. It requires a lot of patience to completely remove stretch marks, especially if you are doing it by applying topical ointments and not the fast and effective yet expensive laser surgery. You can still make those stretch marks less noticeable, as long as you apply Retin-A or other creams for that matter. If you also have the time, you can exercise so your skin and muscles will regain its tight and firm composure. Eat a balanced diet and drink water. These will all help you get healthier skin. The Low Down On Low Glycemic Foods and How It Can Help Curb Hunger and Lose Weight

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By P.L. Fields Glycemic index (GI) measures the rate at which glucose (or blood sugar) enters the bloodstream. Glycemic load (GL) measures both the GI and the total carbs in a particular food. Sometimes eating foods that are low GI, doesn’t always reflect the effect of eating a food. Sometimes foods that are healthy and have a high GI, don’t have enough carbohydrate in a serving because GI is calculated by carbohydrates. You would have to eat a couple pounds of carrots for the GI of carrots to reflect the effect on the body. Glycemic Load is the best measure of how a food is affecting our bodies. Fiber is one of the reasons why research links low GL diets with less hunger, greater weight loss, and improved blood sugar control (being able to curb your droopy spells during the day). It also lowers the risk for heart disease. People that are on high protein diets, low carb (nutritionally void carb) diets are more satisfied, than those doing the low-fat diet. This makes sense when you think of it. For example, you might eat a piece of meat and you are eating food that has a lot of substance and is satisfying, and your friend eats some crackers. Those crackers have less substance and nutritional value and is turning into glucose too quickly, making your friend hungry 15 minutes later, while you feel satisfied until your next meal. A low GL load diet allows 40 % of daily calorie intake from low GL carbs (fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods), and 30% each from protein and healthy fats (monosaturated and omega-3 oils) have been proven to lower BMI (Body Mass Index). It also lowers bad cholesterol. I have seen lists on the internet on the foods that are high GI and low GI. There should be lists as well of low and high GL foods. GL is something that is becoming more popular as a means to understand how certain foods affect our bodies, but I have been using the low or high GI approach since I have seen more information about it. The list is easy to obtain over the internet. I usually stick to low GI foods before periods of activity or exercise and if I eat high GI foods, it is always after exercise. This is my personal preference. It makes me feel good all day. I have done workouts where I have eaten bananas or grape juice (both high GI) and have felt the “sugar rush” in the workout, making me struggle a little in the workout. If I eat a little protein and something with low GI, my energy is sustained much better. This is something you might want to test out yourself. Help Me! I Can’t Seem To Lose The Weight? White Flower Girl Dress: Careful - Not All Whites Are Created Equal

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Janet Donahue White flower girl dresses are the classic choice. Its an easy, safe choice right? Not at all. Not all ‘whites’ are created equal. Not all whites look good together. In fact, some can look really, really bad together. So what to do? Just follow a few basics and you should be fine. While color is becoming more popular, chances are that the Bride’s wedding gown will be mostly some shade of white. White is white. Or is it? White comes in many shades and hues, and many do not work well together. There is Brilliant White (often just called ‘white’) - Diamond White (which is really off-white) - Off-White Candlelight - Silk White (more on that in a moment) - Ivory - Cream - and there are others. What it comes down to is this: When bright whites and off-whites are mixed, the person(s) in the off-white colors will look dingy next to the bright white. Simply put - bright whites and off-whites do not mix well together. And if you are the Bride, this could be an especially terrible thing! Many bridal gowns are in silk. “Silk White” is absolutely never bright white - that is the nature of the gorgeous natural fabric. Silk white (no matter how brightly it is dyed) will never look good next to bright white of other fabrics (like polyester, cotton or nylon). “But my gown is satin” . . . . you say. But the REAL question is - What is the satin made of? Is the satin made of polyester, nylon, acetate, silk? “My gown is made of organza” — again - same question. In other words, what is the fiber content (rather than the ‘weave’, which is satin or velvet or tulle, etc.). Why is it important? You need to know to coordinate the rest of the wedding party. If the Bride is in silk white or any shade of off-white you DEFINITELY do not want anybody else in the wedding party to be wearing bright white because it will make the bride look dingy. It can be easily avoided. Now, if you are the kind of bride who wants to glow and everybody else look a little less stellar, here is your chance to reverse the roles . . . but it’s not recommended. . . . Interestingly enough, the off-whites and deeper ivories often go very well together. One of our #1 selling color combinations for Flower Girl dresses is in an ivory/champagne color (see the Melissa dress in our Private Collection). So when you are selecting your white flower girl dress or dresses, be sure to know exactly what shade of white you need to coordinate. If the Bride is in brilliant white, the flower girl dress should also be brilliant white but if the bride is in off-white or silk white, the white flower girl dress should be the correct shade as well. If you want color — we have many suggestions for you, too! Written by the Wedding Coordination staff at Perfect Occasions special occasion and formal wear boutiques from The Perfect Pear, l.l.c. Sports Marketing - Find Out Why More and More Companies are Choosing It

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Riccardo Taf Anybody who works in marketing knows well that one of the first and most important thing to do is target definition. Target definition requires a systematic approach: from the analysis of the needs of the market to the analysis of the existence of an economic potential going through the market borders definition till the selection of the sector/sections of the market to be considered. Companies are increasingly choosing to reach their target using innovative tools such as CRM, guerrilla marketing, one to one etc. etc. Consumers preferences and wishes are changing on a daily basis and marketing strategies have to follow this constant transformation if they want to be effective. As a consequence companies must be flexible and ready to change quickly their marketing instrument. Sports marketing is an effective marketing tools , it gives a company the opportunity to leverage on the passion that consumers have for sports. To sponsor something doesn’t mean simply to appear with one’s logo on the shirts of a football team or on the board around the playfield. To be sponsor means to be able to transfer to the brand or to the company the sports’ positive value reaching at the same time via the passion the heart of the consumer. Sports marketing is one of the most effective way to reach a specific target because just as every product has got its target of consumers, every sport has got its target of fans, viewers and followers. So companies need to select among all the different sports the one which gets the highest number of people in target, check TV and other media coverage, understand what is the competition doing , look at the sports market and device a communication plan based on it. This extreme simplification doesn’t have to mislead you to think that planning a sponsorship programme is an easy task. There are so many different players around a sport event , just to name a few: athletes, clubs, promoters, sponsors, agents, tv and other media , supporters and so on that in order to be sure that everything is properly taken care of one needs to manage carefully any and each aspects. Marketing plans always start from imagination and creativity but results are achieved only through good planning and perfect implementation, because of this a sport marketing programme requires A Specific research to evaluate the congruency between product and sport A careful exam of the chosen sport’s market to reach an agreement with the most trustworthy partner A good communication campaign Constant and targeted PR Reliable People on field In few words one needs a steady organization with a lot of experience and a professional approach in order to be sure to get the most out of a sponsorship. Big Northerns Through The Ice

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Garth Epp As an ice fisherman I love the thrill pulling a huge northern pike through the ice. I’ve learned a few lessons over the years. Typically learn the most from our failures, not our successes, and that also holds true for ice fishing for big northern pike. I hope you can save yourself some pain and learn from my trail and error. With a proper game plan and the right equipment you can set yourself up to put some beautiful fish up on the ice. There is not a lot to it, but you do need to create a game plan that will give you the highest opportunity possible to catch these monsters. I target these larger fish later in the season when the weather is warming and with that the fish are bulking up for the spawn. I like to fish lakes with a history of big fish, but more importantly, lakes that have good weed structure. I drill a series of holes when I first hit the ice and then let the auger lay. I would recommend using a hole no less than 10 inches. When it comes to getting that massive head in the hole you need all the advantage you can get. I like to drill the holes along a weed bed that is alongside deeper water. Ideally you want to be situated near a spawning area. For big pike I believe in presenting a large, still bait. I love using a tip-up for this type of presentation. I build my rigs using a 12 to 18 inch leader, 2 size 1/0 treble hooks and a slip ring. I attach one treble hook on the end of the leader and have the second leader slide freely on the leader with the slip ring. I attach the leader to a 40 to 50 pound black braided line. I like a black braided line so I can see the line on the ice and also so I can control the line with my hands as I fight the fish. Large pike hit large bait. I complete the rig with about 8-10 inch bait. I buy my bait from the local super market. I like using sardines. They are very soft and I think that they become an attractant as they sit in the water. Tulibee are also a good choice especially if they are natural to the body of water you are fishing. I simply apply one treble hook in the head and one treble hook in the tail of the bait. I let the bait sink to the bottom and raise it about 6-12 inches off the bottom. Then I let it sit. I like to set the rig on the deeper side of the weed bed. I use a tip up for this rig as now I just let it sit. If Im fishing with a group we will run a number of these rigs along the edge of the weed bed, some closer and some further off. The pike I catch on a rig just described is 30 inches and up, with the majority of my fish in the 40 inch range. Now it can be a waiting game, or you can be active in the process. Living in Manitoba I am only permitted 2 lines in the water. Depending on the body of water I am fishing, I set up 2 rigs like this, or other times I set up one rig and then use an ice fishing rod to target pan fish and bait fish. This does 2 things. Firstly it helps occupy me as I usually need to be moving and have something to do. Secondly, it attracts baitfish to the area, and therefore helps draw in the larger pike. I enjoy jigging for perch and as I keep perch in the area I am fishing Im convinced it acts as another attractant to big pike. When the tip up flag goes, the real fun begins. Approach the flag slowly as you do not want to spook the fish. It is important not to set the hook right away. This is where experience comes into play. I am convinced these fish spin the bait in their mouths after the initial hit. You need to get to the rig and quietly determine what the fish is doing. After they hit the bit the fish will move a short distance and then stop. This is where your will power and discipline come into play. Wait! Wait until the fish starts to move again before you set the hook. I gently pull in the slack after the initial hit and pull it until is tight. Then I let it off just a touch and wait until the fish starts to move again. This process will take at least a minute and possibly more. I have set the hook at this point if I have waited for a considerable amount of time and it has not moved. Again, slowly tighten the line and then when it is tight give a hard set and get ready for that line to sing. If you set the hook and there is nothing there, you may have set the hook too soon. It may also be a smaller fish and they tried to bite off more than they could chew. Once the hooks are set, the fish will take off and you need to keep tension on the line, but let it go where it wants to go. If you have other rigs down in the area, get them up because these things can run a long way and a tangle only makes the tension higher. From here you just pull when it lets up and let it run when it wants to go. This is where the heavy braided line is nice at it wont cut your hands if you are careful and you can see it as you pull it up on the ice. Your blood will boil as you see the beast swim past the hole and keep your head about you as you need to gently work that massive head into the hole. As the fish comes out on the ice be careful as this is where many break offs can occur. A gaff can be used, but it could definitely damage the fish. I usually prepare to go down after it with my arm if needed, but the trouble is you are taking your life in your hand when you put your arm down a hole with a big pike and 2 trebles! But hey, your wounds will heal. And I find those wounds heal a lot sooner than the wounds of losing one of these trophy fish. I trust you will have the opportunity to pick up some of that spring sun as you sit out on the ice this spring and wait with anticipation for the flag to dance indicating you have a fish on the line that is worth getting up out your seat for. Garth invites you to All About Fishing Rods, an informational based web site to assist anglers. Check out your many options before you buy your next ice fishing rod or tip up. Abdominal Weight Loss: Yoga Can Help You Lose the Gut

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Foras Aje Whenever anyone says or gestures that they want to lose weight, most of the time, they point to their guts saying I wanna lose all this! Obviously, abdominal weight loss is a goal for many people. However, what most people might not be aware of is that-of all exercises-Yoga actually can help immensely for weight loss in the abdominal region. There are specific poses, that target excess weight in the abdomen and coupled with a customized diet, those seeking abdominal weight loss would find success in using these yoga exercises. Lets go over them, shall we? Abdominal Weight Loss: Yoga Poses to Use. 1. The Sun Salutations: These are a combination of poses that serve as a warm up-routine for a Yoga session or class. They are very similar to the popular calisthenics exercise known as burpees. However, they differ in that they have a spiritual significance included as a result of executing them. Due to the forward and backward bending motions involved, after performing a few to several rounds on a daily basis, you are bound to notice a marked loss of weight in you abdominal area and the added bonus of muscular tone. 2. The Bow Pose: This simple pose involves laying flat on your belly and grabbing your ankles with both arms while simultaneously lifting your head up high. When performed correctly, you should be resting on your abdomen. Needless to say, it is a pose commonly recommended for weight loss and the prevention and correction of chronic constipation. 3. The Peacock Pose: This is slightly more challenging. The objective is to balance your abdomen on your conjoined elbows while simultaneously raising your legs and head of the floor. Naturally, merely attempting it speeds up abdominal weight loss and detoxification of the visceral organs and the preparatory stage could suffice as the actual execution of the pose till the mastery of it is achieved. 4. Social Skills and Friendship: What Are the Signs of a True Friend?

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Ellen Mossman-Glazer The best kinds of people to have around you are the caring kind. They are what we think of as ‘true’ friends. Getting to know whos who can be most interesting and sometimes most challenging. This advice is universal. It fits for anyone of any age when making decisions about who to bring into your life and heart as a friend. However, these tips are stated in a way that will be especially helpful for tweens and teens as well as for kids and adults with ADHD, Autism or Asperger Syndrome. These tips will be useful for those who have a difficult time picking up the cues and clues that give them the Go! or the No! when it comes to friendship. Here are eight tips to guide you to recognize a true friend: 1. Do you feel your friend cares about what you have to say? A real friend pays attention while you are talking and asks questions if he or she does not fully understand your situations or feeling before giving advice about it. 2.True friends are interested in what is good for you not for what you can give to them or do for them. A true friend would advise you to do only what is safe, smart and helpful to you. It helps sometimes to see if other people you like and respect also like your new friend. 3. Do you ever feel pressure to do something you dont want to do? If you feel this way, it is your true friends who can help you sort out how to be yourself, do the right thing and still be a part of the crowd. 4. If you make a mistake, a true friend helps you feel better. A true friend does not make you feel dumb, gossip to others or criticize you. 5. A true friend gives you space and privacy if you want it. You dont have to explain or wonder if your friend will be upset if you prefer to do something your own way, on your own time. 6. When you have problem, a true friend encourages you to find people you trust to help you take the right steps to solve it. to tell you to talk to an adult or with the right experience. 7. True friends understand how much you can do. If your parents dont permit you to go out on school nights, a true friend will stick by you when you can be together. 8. A true friend lets you have other friends. You dont have to worry about a true friend getting upset if you spend time with someone else. There are so many different ways youcan spend time with people. You might have a certain friend who loves to play basketball with you and other friends who are your movie or concert friends. This does not mean dropping your friend for something else. Real friends have mutual respect and make room for each other to do what they want. This guide is also a good way to evaluate how good a friend you are to others!
