The Character Education Movement Takes on Pragmatism, Confuses it with Instrumental Reason

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Hans Hacker Recently I stumbled across what looked like a very succinct description of the pragmatist philosophy (or as I like to call it the pragmatist disbelief system”). In fact, Bob Shermans article provides a nice summary of core concepts of the pragmatist movement. He does what at first glance appears to be an admirable job of explaining the relationship of pragmatism to truth-claims, emphasizing that pragmatists define the truth of any particular proposition as a) not an absolute position and b) based on the usefulness of that proposition. The article is well worth looking over if you want to understand how those endorsing “character education” view pragmatism. It does not take long to realize that while Mr. Sherman gets some of this right, he has fundamentally misunderstood the implications of reasoning pragmatically. His mischaracterization is not unusual. I thought I might take the opportunity to clarify what is in fact the pragmatist system of thought and how it works itself out in the sphere of social and economic policy. The main difficulty Mr. Sherman runs into is a common onethe equation of pragmatism with instrumental reason, which is itself bound up with relativism (the belief that any set of life choices is as good as any other), subjectivism (morals are not grounded in reason, but individual choices to limit behavior for no other reason than we desire it so) and the pursuit of authenticity. Mr. Sherman points to corporate Americas emphasis on profit maximization as examples of pragmatism in action: Any time you see business leaders, politicians, or other social leaders emphasizing their vision for the future, they are focusing on results or consequences. If they do not emphasize objective moral standards that will help determine their means of achieving those desired goals, they are likely to be adherents to the philosophy of pragmatism. For example, businesses that seek to improve their profitability may attempt to ignore worker loyalty as well as health and safety standards. This characterizes many companies that move high paying manufacturing jobs from the United States to Mexico. Northern Mexico is the home of numerous U.S. companies for which profits is most important. This argument is a unique one in one respect - although it comes from a proponent of the religious conservative Character Education Movement, it suggests that the marketplace is not always fair (what has conservatism come to?). Let’s set that aside and simply address the implications of the example as given. Is American pragmatism at its heart a self-centered ideology in which even the most callous and unfeeling policies can be justified as beneficial at some level (individual or organizational)? Is it a system that focuses our attention on immediate gratification regardless of larger consequence? I doubt it. Instrumental reason is the belief that any decision should benefit ones own narrow self-interest. Under this definition, gratification of ones desires (base and elevated) is the primary good, and other people exist simply as tools for achieving those ends. Thus, someone who endorses instrumental reasoning will interpret things like wedding vows (I take thee to be mine in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad) to their own benefit (I take thee to be mine so long as its good for me). Niccolo Machiavelli provided us with an early example of instrumental reason in his play Mandragola. Unlike the British version of Machiavellianism, in this play everything works out for the good so long as everyone pursues their own narrow self-interest and use others as tools to achieve that selfish aim. While the play proposes an ideal philosophy for governing personal relationships (as well as political), it also demonstrates how personal relationships are narrowed and attenuated when they merely serve the purpose of achieving some self-interested goal. At first blush, the idea of looking at results suggests the basis for a purely instrumental calculation. For example, on the surface it appears pragmatic to ask oneself if some action leads to the greatest personal benefit, and if the behavior does not, adjust ones behavior so that what is produced achieves the goal. This is not pragmatism. At its heart, pragmatism is based on the idea that any belief (or disbelief) demands justification since life is characterized by adaptation to changing circumstances, the choices we make must be based on careful evaluation of results achieved. In contrast, instrumental reason endorses the idea that no choice is based in reasonpeople should not be required to justify life choices using standards of reason, good or bad, or some moral principle having to do so might warp their sense of authentic self, subjecting them to external standards (which are assumed to be by nature arbitrary). As Charles Taylor puts it, those who reason instrumentally endorse the idea that . . . everyone has a right to develop their own form of life, grounded on their own sense of what is really important or of value. People are called upon to be true to themselves and to seek their own self-fulfillment. What this consists of, each must, in the last instance, determine for him- or herself. No one else can or should try to dictate its content [1] Thus, the only moral groundings for instrumental reason are the axiomatic beliefs that human beings can only be fully human when they act upon unconstrained self-interest and that no one should be required to vigorously defend any life choice. But, this is not a sufficient explanation of choice for a pragmatist because we cannot be sure that acting purely for self-fulfillment will at all times lead to full humanness, i.e., a fully developed human character, or any other measure of success (I believe it is quite natural for pragmatism to question whether this kind of self-serving authenticity is the only important goal). The difference between pragmatism and instrumental reason, then, turns on what is the process for determining what is true. As we have seen, instrumental reason is simply another form of axiomatic thinking in which central tenets for belief remain unchallenged. There are two reasons any good pragmatist should be mortified by the notion that we can achieve full human capacity by using others as means for achieving the end of self-fulfillment. First, reasoning instrumentally violates the idea that beliefs require justificationclearly the idea that no one should be required to justify choices precludes any inquiry into whether some choice or belief is useful at all times. Second, “true” beliefs are those that are ultimately accepted as the result of strenuous and attentive inquiry by the widest possible community of sincere inquirers. Instrumental reason negates the possibility of creating such a community bound together by the pursuit of careful inquiry and flexible enough to abandon the most closely held belief if circumstances require it. This is because community, or being in dialogue with others, is unnecessary for achieving the goal of fully developed human character, or (worse still, as noted above) can subject those who reason instrumentally to external review. Oliver W. Holmes provides an example of the difference between reasoning instrumentally and reasoning pragmatically. In the South leading up to the Civil War, most slave owners would argue that the slave culture of the South produced considerable benefit, in particular to them, but also to the nation through the production of goods for which a slave culture was supposedly ideally suited. In other words, the cost of subjecting a race of people to slavery was more than outweighed by the economic benefit to the nation. Slavery was a means for achieving national economic greatest. How could Holmes reasonably and pragmatically oppose the institution of slavery? Yet Holmes supported the abolitionist movement (at first on moral grounds), and left Harvard University before graduating to take up a commission in the Union army. Was he being unreasonable? Holmes returned from the Civil War with the belief that reasoning based on results could provide a better chance for averting cataclysmic events such as war than reasoning from fixed, supposedly universal principles ever could. Furthermore, anyone applying this standard (if it can be called that) would naturally agree that retaining the institution of slavery was bad. And, they would arrive at this conclusion not based on any moral consideration, but by looking at results. Leaving the devastation of the Civil War aside for the moment, slavery caused considerable social and legal turmoil in the states. Furthermore, it was never clear that slave culture was the only, or even the best, method the South could employ for contributing to economic advancement. Holmes realized that if a society wishes to apply the most violent methods for settling disputes over social policy, it should fail to engage in careful and strenuous inquire, fail to abandon long held beliefs when demonstrated to result in harm, and a hold fast to axiomatic thinking at all times. Holmes found those who fit this bill on all sides of the dispute (let us not forget the rampages of abolitionists). [1] Taylor, Charles. The Ethics of Authenticity. The Secret Formula to Take 10 Years Off Your Body

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Frederic Patenaude This may come as a surprise to you, but last year I did the most amazing thing in my life. I fasted 23 days on water. For 23 days, I had nothing but water. Now you may be wondering: why in the world did I do that?! Let me explain: Ive always wanted to fast simply because fasting is the oldest and greatest way to experience body and mind rejuvenation. It is also a safe process, when properly supervised. So in January 2005, I took 6 weeks off and went to Costa Rica to fast with Dr. Graham, a doctor of Natural Hygiene and fasting expert. For 3 weeks I fasted and for 3 weeks I ate amazing tropical fruits and vegetables. After that experience, I looked 10 years younger (basically like a kid)! I doubled my energy levels, I experienced an invigorating love of life that I had never quite felt before, and I was so powered that in the next months I literally doubled my business and my income. What is fasting? What I learned in Costa Rica with Dr. Graham is that fasting is not just about not eating. It is really about giving the body a complete rest. So in that way, fasting is resting. When I was fasting in Costa Rica, I slept or rested about 20 hours a day. Now you may be wondering: wasnt that boring?! Let me tell you: it is simply one of the best things in the world to finally get that rest that you need. It’s the rest youve been longing for all your life, it seems. When you fast in Costa Rica, you basically spend your time in the hammock, reading good books, listening to the birds, watching the ocean, chatting with friends, drinking water, and sleeping all you care for. During that time, your body is at work healing you. How fasting works The body has enough reserves to fast several weeks without any damage whatsoever. Fasting is not starving. During a fast, your body utilizes its own fat reserves for survival. It is an ability that all humans have. When you fast, you give your body a chance to take out the garbage so to speak, and begin the work of healing and repairing. Because there is no more energy spent on digestion, all of this leftover energy can be used for rejuvenation. That is the reason fasting has been used for eons as a way to give the body a chance to heal itself. That is why so many people experience so many positive health transformations when they fast. That is also why you could take 10 years off your body if you decided to go on a properly supervised, water fast. What to expect on a fast When you fast longer than a week, you can expect several things to happen. For one, your body is going to get rid of some toxins. It may be uncomfortable at times (some people experience temporary nausea or headaches), but it is generally a painless process. You wont feel hunger after just 2-3 days, when your body starts using its own fat reserves. That may seem amazing, but its true I can testify. You might desire some food for the first week or so, but even that goes away. You can expect to lose a lot of weight, but if you dont have much to lose (like me), it comes back rather quickly after the fast. If you have weight to lose, you can keep it off after the fast by following a proper diet. After your fast, your eyes will be brighter, your skin clearer, and youll feel like a child. How You Can Fast Fasting is not something you can do on your own! If you want have a good experience fasting, you need to be supervised by someone who has years of experience with fasting. You should have plenty of time for your fast and to recover after your fast. You also want your fast to be done in a place where the climate is enjoyable all day long (the tropics are ideal), away from the distraction of modern civilization and surrounded by trees, water, and beautiful birds. If you feel ready to take the plunge and experience the magic of fasting yourself, make sure you select the right fasting environment and the right professional to supervise your fast. Also, keep in mind that the best time to fast is when you dont have time to fast! — To learn more about fasting and to get the chance to fast with Dr. Graham this year, go to: http://www.fredericpatenaude.com/fastingwithdoug.html Remember that fasting in Costa Rica with Dr. Graham is a unique opportunity. Hes accepting less than 10 fasters per year, and this may be the last year hes doing it. Getting Rid Of Constipation And Improving Your Health

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rory_H._Hawkins] Rory H. Hawkins There is no avoiding this fact-constipation is a big personal issue. That flatulent discomfort can rupture your day, and negatively affect all your chores throughout a day. It can also be a bummer against that happy summer vacation you planned. But being constipated is just not a matter of physical discomfort, its terrible for the overall health too. The basic reason of constipation is almost always poor eating habits. Constipation also signifies the inability of your bowels to execute their function due to poor quantity of fiber in your food. These bad habits of eating have fallouts for your body that reach beyond a simple discomfort. In fact what goes inside your stomach can have far reaching consequences for your body and can cause such serious diseases like cancer and heart troubles. Fortunately you have many solutions for this problem that will stop constipation was well as build up your overall health. It is common knowledge that lack of fiber is the central reason of constipation so your first aim should be to eat food with a high content of fiber in them. This will have an additional benefit, because reports show that fiber also prevents you from heart diseases too. You can begin with a bowl of oatmeal, and along the way can add several pieces of fruit, and a bran muffin together with the nutritious oatmeal. Most people will find that increasing your intake of fiber will serve as a healthy and natural way of putting a stop to constipation. Foods rich in fiber content will also reduce your cholesterol, your blood pressure, and lower the chances of developing cancer of the colon too. You will find a great amount of fiber from vegetables and fruits. Just consume them with the skin on. They are not just rich with fiber content, but fruits and vegetables are full of minerals and vitamins together with powerful antioxidants that can help strengthen the defense mechanism of your body, protecting you from germs and diseases. Try to add 5 or more bowls of vegetables and fruits to your everyday diet and you will be surprised by your new high levels of energy and the factor of feel-good. Vegetables high in fiber content are cauliflower, sprouts, Brussels, peas, acorn squash, and artichoke. Pears, papaya, prunes, figs, blackberries and raspberries are some of the fruits that have high amount of fiber. I would not advise the use of laxatives, although many people take that route to get rid of constipation. Constipation can be handled more naturally by less eating of junk foods, and more intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. If all these ideas do not help you much in the long run and you continue to suffer from bouts of constipation, then I guess it would be time to consult a doctor personally. Finding A Legal Aid Lawyer

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Sky Joe Legal aid refers to the act of providing legal help to people who are unable to pay for their court representations out of their pockets. This setup is specially requested by the liberal groups to ensure that the poor and the foreign people will be properly represented in court. This thus resulted in the emergence of legal aid lawyers who are willing to offer their expertise to people who can’t afford to hire a attorney. Most lawyers are usually listed in the Yellow Pages under “Barristers and Solicitors” and “Lawyers”; but not all these lawyers are available for legal aid. Some lawyers may answer questions about legal aid for free, but you should always check this with the lawyer when you start talking to them. In addition, the state and local bar associations maintain lawyer referral lists. Hence, you may wish to approach the lawyer referral service foran attorney who specializes in the type of case that you are concerned with. However, it should be noted that such referrals does not guarantee a level of experience. In most circumstances, a legal aid lawyer will only be available if you can’t afford one to represent you at a court, tribunal or other judicial body. For criminal offences, you have the option to choose your own lawyer if you wish to. If not, the Legal Aid Society will assign a lawyer suitable for your case off the list of approved lawyers. For disputes relating to civil, family and domestic violence, you will have to find your own lawyer. There are a few things that you must know before you approach any legal aid lawyer. Your lawyer must generally be based in the location where your case is to be heard. In addition, he must be able to appear at court when needed In other words, he has to be willing and available to represent you in court. More importantly, your lawyer should have the right experience to deal with your case. You can find out more about the lawyer by searching on the internet or contacting the association that the lawyer is affiliated to. On the other hand, there are some important items that you need to provide when you approach your lawyer. This will help him to assess your situation better. It is essential that you provide information on the following: any letters or documents about your case your personal and financial details, including proof of your earnings and weekly expenses any income support or family support you receive any property or assets you own any debts or mortgages that you might have. If you have a partner (de facto or married) you also have to provide details of their financial situation. However, if your dispute is with your partner, they don’t have to fill out a form. In some cases, you may be required to pay a contribution towards your legal aid costs. There are a few ways that you can do this. You can opt to pay a lump sum, or pay in installments by automatic payment. Another alternative is to pay the costs from the money you get if your case is successful. Why there is No Such Thing as a Perfect Diet

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Doug Purcell Diets are tempting to go on, and there are many that come out each year and many people get it. However I know in the back of their mind that they know that the diet wont work because they have been on so many before. Since the 1950s, the United States government has been working to put the perfect nutritional program for optimal health. They also invested in numerous of studies for health and nutrition and we all know that these theories on health fluctuate back and forth. This method is known as the food pyramid. Well, the thing is people have to listen to their own body to determine what they need at times, and how much. However what I focus on is a permanent way of eating, not temporary regimes. Some diets may work temporary, you may lose a couple of pounds, but that all you will lose, and sooner or later you will gain all that weight back and possibly more! The reason why diets dont work is because its not biologically able to fit into your body. What? This means that all diets are depriving you of one of the molecules that your body needs to survive. For instance the Atkins diet deprives you of carbohydrates and gives you excessive amounts of proteins. This is not the correct balance for a human being, and you need carbohydrates in order to function properly. The molecules of life are organic compounds. Organic compounds contain carbon and at least one hydrogen atom. Living organism consists primarily of carbon oxygen, and hydrogen. We get most of our oxygen and hydrogen in the form of water. Thats why its essential for you to drink enough water. I know many people will ask the standard question, how much water should I drink? Well that all depends on many factors. Its obvious that a 50 foot woman will require less water than a 60 male because of the size difference. However, the strategy that I went by, especially when I was participating in sports is to drink enough water until your urine is crystal clear. If your urine is yellow, that is a good indicator to drink more water. So, diets dont work is simply its depriving. Your diet should never be depriving; it should give you a balance of essential nutrients. Defeating Workplace Repetitive Strain Injuries

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Jeff Anliker, LMT Repetitive strain injuries (RSI’s) in the workplace, including, but not limited to carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis, have risen to pandemic proportions during the past 5 years. Without even considering worldwide costs, the United States alone spends more than 100 billion annually. These annual expenditures include lost time from work, job retraining, light duty restrictions, employee replacements / fill-ins, rehabilitation, surgery, increased insurance premiums and many other factors. Even with these tremendous costs to businesses, individuals, government and taxpayers, the problem continues to be ignored, resulting in an even greater number of workplace injuries and overall costs. Musculoskeletal disorders are the country’s most costly category of workplace injuries and illnesses. In addition to spending $20 billion annually on workers’ compensation costs due to RSI’s, the U.S. spends another $100 billion on lost productivity, employee turnover, and other indirect expenses. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research . The solution? Quit ignoring the problem and implement prevention protocols to eliminate repetitive strain injuries before they arise! Here are a few ways to do just that, with minimal costs to businesses and huge long-term savings for everyone! Job/Task Rotation: Job rotation helps to eliminate repetitive strain injuries in the workplace. When implementing job rotation, the tasks must engage different muscle groups in order to allow recovery for those muscle groups already being strained. Be sure that each task takes not longer than 1-hour before moving to another task. Workstation Design: In this category the key is to fit the workplace to the worker, not the worker to the workplace in order to reduce the onset of repetitive strain injuries. Having a properly designed workstation decreases the effort required in order to maintain a proper working position. (The workstation must be adjustable to fit the worker.) Tools: The use of proper (ergonomic) tools and equipment significantly decreases the amount of force necessary to complete any given task, thereby reducing the chance of becoming afflicted with a repetitive strain injury. These tools don’t actually eliminate the onset of a repetitive strain injury, but may increase the time in which it takes to get the injury. ( i.e. The injury occurs in 10- years instead of 2-years) Work Habits: Taking necessary breaks and performing stretches and exercises to keep the over and underused muscles balanced are the most significant elements in preventing repetitive strain injuries from arising. Well-balanced muscles eliminate nerve impingement syndromes like carpal tunnel syndrome and encourage circulation, providing oxygen to surrounding muscles and nerves. Talk with your employee health supervisor about implementing the necessary protocols to keep yourself and other workers healthy and costs down. Take the responsibility of your health into your own hands and do the things necessary to prevent a repetitive strain injury from affecting you! Stop Eating Your Heart Out African Americans

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Shondelle Solomon According to the health profession, statistics show that African Americans have a higher than average risk compared to others of getting heart disease, cancer and other diet-related diseases and dying from them. However, those same health professionals reveal there’s something that African Americans can do to help change that, and the simple solution is to–Eat Right. That doesn’t mean giving up the love of “soul food.” By making the right food choices when cooking “down home-style,” African Americans can reduce the risk of getting those diseases in the first place. Many of the basic dietary guidelines for Americans in general should also be followed by African Americans. These basic guidelines include, but are not limited to: (1) Eating a variety of foods. (2) Maintaining a healthy body weight according to height and gender. (3) Choosing diets low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. (4) Choosing diets with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grain products. (5) Using sugars and other sweeteners in moderation. (6) Using salt and sodium in moderation. (7) Drinking alcoholic beverages in moderation. The National Cancer Institute estimates that about one-third of all cancer deaths may be related to the foods eaten. Some studies show that diets high in fat and low in fiber may be linked to cancers of the colon, breast, and prostate. These are the leading causes of cancer deaths among African Americans. Choosing diets and meals that are low in fat can reduce these risks while helping to control weight. Losing excess weight helps to lower high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure–two of the major risk factors for heart disease. Nutritionists suggest eating fish more often. It’s relatively low in calories, fat, and saturated fat. It’s also a good source of high-quality protein and vitamins and minerals. A simple way of getting the most healthful benefits of fish is to oven bake it–rather than frying. This does not mean that meats should not continue to be part of a healthy diet. Meat is very much a part of lean cooking. Just remember to choose lean cuts of meat, cut all visible fat from meat before cooking. Cook meats in ways that reduce, rather than add fat–such as baking, simmering, roasting, broiling, grilling, braising, microwaving, or even stir-frying in nonstick skillets. They’ll be just as juicy and tender as fatter, fried meats–but they’ll be healthier for you and your family. To remove fats from homemade broths, soups, and stews–prepare the food ahead and chill it. Before reheating, lift off the hardened fat formed at the surface. If you don’t have time to chill the food, float a few ice cubes on the surface of the warm liquid to harden the fat. Then, remove the fat and discard. Other keys to “down home” healthy cooking are: (1) prepare poultry with skin removed (2) Use low-fat or nonfat/skim milk (3) Use low-fat or part skim milk cheeses (4) Use evaporated skim milk (5) Use nonfat or low-fat dressing, yogurt or mayonnaise (6) Use mustard more often (7) Use low sodium bouillon and broths (8) Eat fruits and vegetables without added fat When it comes to fiber, or roughage… as it was called back in the day–grains and beans are some of the best sources of fiber. Studies show that Americans in general don’t eat much fiber. Research shows that populations that eat fiber rich foods have lower rates of colon cancer. This is why health professionals recommend that people eat twice as much fiber than they normally do. So, put away the deep fat fryers and make more use of steamers, ovens, microwaves, and grills. You will discover some intense new flavors to all your main dishes that are going to make a big difference to your health. Stop eating your heart out African Americans! Why Falling in Love is Not So Easy!

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Elaine Sihera What are the ingredients that make the ultimate romantic experience possible? What are some folks missing which prevent them from actually reaching that highly-desired goal at any time in their lives? Well, it could be four crucial things, actually: 1. Self-Love 2. Expressiveness 3. Emotional Openness 4. Faith in the Future Self-Love The most important factor when we are hoping to fall in love is self-love. If we need someone to ‘complete’ our life instead of to enhance it, someone to ‘make’ us happy, instead of sharing our happiness or someone to make us feel good instead of sharing our joy, we have a problem with self-love. In fact, a lack of self-love is the biggest cause of personal problems in our life because too many people readily carry that burden. They do not like themself and dislike certain key aspects of their bodies, but then, paradoxically, expect others to like what they reject!! That is not possible. We can only truly love when we ourselves have love because the greatest love is not waiting outside to find us. It actually lies dormant inside of us, yearning to be discovered and nurtured. Everything else is just the icing on the cake, but YOU are that cake! And a delicious one too. When that fact is fully realised, acknowledged and accepted, you are well on the road to giving love and loving another unconditionally. Above all, you will find it really easy to fall in love with all the fanfare and starlight you dream of. But loving the self is not so easy to do when we have had little reinforcement of our worth since childhood, or we get little affirmation from work, home or loved ones, and if we are always taken for granted or ignored. We then tend to feel unwanted, unappreciated and invisible. If we have also been hurt a number of times, it reinforces all those unsavoury experiences. Difficult to love that little self when no one else seems to love it! But self-love is the most important thing we have to work for in our lives, especially if we wish to get rid of unnecessary anxieties, to grow with confidence in who we are, to lead independent lives without clinging to another and to feel worthy of the life we have. Self-love comes from two things, above all: knowing who you are and knowing what you want, and making sure they stand out clearly to everyone you meet. Those who are seeking what you have to give will be joyful while making you even happier. It also means that you will only attract people who love those traits about you. The others will stay away, which dramatically cuts down the time-wasting in trying to select suitable partners. It makes the chance of you falling in love much higher and you won’t ever have to apologise for who you are and wish to be. Moreover, if you do not know what you want in your life, you won’t be able to recognise it when you see it. You have to be sure of it to know it! So, the first lesson in both confidence and setting the scene for falling in love is to BE who you are, LOVE who you are and don’t worry about who might not respond positively because those who like what they see will flock to you. Moreover, when we merely try to please others, we give mixed messages, we go against what we value and end up pleasing no one, least of all ourselves! Expressiveness Many of us find it difficult to be expressive, to communicate easily, to say how we really feel, to express what might be hurting us or to give life to those cherished dreams. But being expressive is a key part of falling in love. Through communication, your partner knows what you desire, what makes you happy, what you are enjoying about the contact, how you are feeling and what you really like about them too. It cannot be taken for granted or merely implied. Falling in love means you want to shout your feelings from the roof tops and do just that! A lack of expressiveness comes through low confidence and a desire to please - mainly for approval. We tend to feel we do not merit being heard or that what we have to say is not that important enough for others so we keep it repressed while we miss opportunities for enjoyable activities. If we have been hurt, expression then becomes a form of repressed anger and resentment instead of love. This attitude also tends to carry over into our loving. We become mean with praise and appreciation, and seldom affirm our partners, yet yearn for that reinforcement ourselves, even feeling peeved when we don’t get it. For example, how often, as women, do we want to hear that we look great when we are dressed or on a date, yet how regularly do we reciprocate in kind? We are likely to believe that any praise of our partners is not deserved. And why not? Is a relationship for punishment and negativity? Most people who lack confidence depend on others to validate them, to affirm that they are worthy. They are unlikely to believe it themselves, so they deny expression and key communication in order to either avoid ’saying the wrong thing’, or ‘upsetting anyone’. They hope that by not saying anything they will win people over and make a better impression, but it often has the opposite effect of robbing that person of credibility and impact. In fact, not expressing our honest thoughts merely confirms perceptions, gives the wrong impressions and creates misunderstandings. Emotional Openness Having passionate and wonderful love affairs in a heart-stopping way contains deep affection which comes through unconditional expressiveness and emotional openness. Yet, when we are hurt (which is a fact of life, nothing unusual!) we tend to retreat inwards, becoming wary of any future liaison. We lock down the emotional hatches while we grow cold and detached, more vulnerable, victim-like and introspective. We find excuses not to be involved or to fall for someone, yet that is the time to put the experience squarely behind you, learn to from it and move on as quickly as possible. Not to dwell on it in a powerless state of resentment. Otherwise, you will become more angry and develop a scapegoat mentality, one which denies everyone else you meet their individuality as you gradually blame them by proxy. If you feel vulnerable and powerless after any hurt, resist it. Vulnerability comes through fear - a fear of the future, the inability to accept the uniqueness of others and letting them prove themselves to us. And wherever there is undue fear there is enforced coldness, detachment and a lack of enjoyment. Yet, falling in love has warmth and love at its core. We cannot fall in love without emotions, and open ones too. We have to be prepared to GIVE unconditionally in order to feel those wonderful vibes. Anything else will be luke-warm. If we are grudging in our emotions, the communication will falter or be superficial, and we really won’t get what we seek. Any fear means we cannot be expressive, we are not able to trust, we cannot let go and we cannot enjoy because we are concentrating so much upon avoiding the possible hurt, we completely miss the pleasure that comes BEFORE any hurt, while turning our fears into self-fulfilling prophecies! In the end, you might not get hurt, as you jealously guard that vulnerability, but you will not have much pleasure either and remain fossilised in the same spot, going nowhere, doing nothing new while becoming increasingly unattractive in the process. Faith in the Future Faith in the future is crucial for new relationships. We have to resist controlling every movement in order to be surprised by what life might have in store for us. People who feel ‘vulnerable’, who feel powerless, who are always worrying about what they might ‘lose’ and how they might be viewed and treated, find it hard to be expressive, trusting and passionate because they have to control everything to feel good. They tend to resist the future, immediate and long-term, in case they are hurt again. Having little faith in their future, they tend to take more than they give, to be cynical of the motives of others. They are also likely to fear commitment and so will seldom experience the joy of falling in love through their inability to let go and live their life spontaneously. Being so busy trying to control its direction, they simply rob their life of its emotion, joy and spontaneity. The best way to approach any relationship is to be prepared for both pleasure and pain. The two are crucial sides of the same coin and you cannot have one without the other. People who fear pain live in an unrealistic world of feckless emptiness and fear, seeking only pleasure without the costs or consequences. But there is ALWAYS a price to pay in life for whatever we have, whether good or bad, that’s Nature’s way of establishing balance, and the more we accept that death is as much an integral part of life as rebirth, the more happiness we will find. There is always great enjoyment when you simply accept the moment AS IT IS, no matter how long it lasts. There is ALWAYS a better moment round the corner, believe me, so it is useless fretting over this one. For many women (and a lot of men too) it is insecurity and a lack of self-love which prevent them from really enjoying their lives, so they burden every new partner and date with their unrealistic anxieties and expectations in their search for perfection. They carry around their baggage of hurt expecting to be hurt again and, surprise, surprise, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Simply love yourself and be warm, kind and compassionate to the next person you meet. It really pays dividends. Express yourself freely and affirm others at every opportunity. Be open with your emotions and less controlling of yourself and others. That allows for some great surprises. Be easier on yourself by reducing your fears and welcoming love into your life. Falling in love will not only be easy, it will also be a real cinch because you would have already laid the crucial groundwork for attracting that ideal partner!
